Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to emerge from colonial rule in 1957. Today Ghana is known for its rich culture and diverse landscapes, including the Savannah grasslands where the weavers get the materials for these baskets. These sturdy and colorful baskets will add a touch of class and support of the African people whenever you use them.
The heavy elephant grass used in these baskets is tightly woven making each basket strong yet flexible. Colors and weaving designs on these elephant grass baskets are varied. You'll often get to choose between "bright" or "subdued" colors. Plus, you may tell us if you have any other preferences in colors in the "Notes" area at checkout.
Not to worry if your basket becomes "squished" because what makes these baskets really unique is that they can be "reshaped" by wetting them with water and then "massaging the basket" back into shape with your fist or open hand. With some baskets, like the fruit baskets, the handles can be pushed down into the baskets and pulled out as needed, making it easy to store when not being used for a picnic or trip to the market.
Basket handles are reinforced with a small amount of cured leather from locally raised goats. Goat is the primary source of protein for people in Ghana, and families who can afford them raise a handful on their small family farms.
Our incredibly useful and durable Bolga Baskets are woven in the Bolgatanga region of Northern Ghana. They're available with or without a handle and are about 11" high (excluding handle), 16" diameter
SHIPPED Our baskets are shipped "squished." If you would like for us to ship in a larger box, just let us know. There is an extra $15 shipping fee for the oversized box.
