Food for the Hungry International
Food for the Hungry Int'l in Bolivia, is devoted to helping the poor to
provide potable water, health and agricultural training and intervention,
and many infrastructure projects. They finished a 15 km irrigation
canal in a region of the altiplano to extend the growing season for 5
farming communities.
"We need to monitor the climatic factors in the area to understand the success or failure of the crops with the use of the irrigation canal. Currently we use a desktop computer at the remote station to download the data from the weather monitoring equipment. The computer is also shared by 6 agricultural and health field trainers who work 20 days a month in the area with the people. There are panels at the site but we do not use an inverter since lighting is dc and so is the radio for communication. our group has a generator that is also shared and is used to generate AC power for the computer but at times it is needed in other communities to show videos for training. If we had an inverter that stayed at the station, the computer would be accessible more often and there would be less need for constant coordination for the shared generations." www.fh.org

Ocean Arks International
Ocean Arks International is researching new applications of the Restorer
technology which is a floating platform that supports plants to help treat
polluted bodies of water or wastewater lagoons. They are interested in exploring
the possibility of growing alternative paper pulp plants on the Restorers
and harvesting them for use in production. This would essentially turn
a wastewater treatment system into a paper producing nursery. They have
several funded projects that could incorporate this idea including treatment
of waste in a sewage canal in China and a wastewater treatment lagoon
for a poultry processing plant in Maryland. www.oceanarks.org
