Stars My Destination Discussion

"It is one of the rare SF novels that never grows old, never wears out its welcome, always has something new to say. (Others are Sturgeon's MORE THAN HUMAN and Clarke's THE CITY AND THE STARS.) I first encountered it over a quarter of a century ago, in Boucher's "Treasury of Science FIction", and was absolutely astonished by it. Bester throws off enough ideas in that single story for a thousand novels by lesser writers. His imagination runs at white heat throughout, and the cosmicism of the conclusion out-2001s "2001". Unlike so many other SF characters, Gully Foyle, Saul Dagenham, pompous Presteign of Presteign, his daughter Olivia, Peter Y'ang-Yeovil, Jisbella Macqueen...all of them stay in memory, they care vividly drawn, their dialogue is realistic, one can see these people, regardless of how fantastic their circumstances or even appearances may be. One of the masterworks of SF; IMHO better than even "THE DEMOLISHED MAN"." - StoOdin 1/21/98

"Being a S.F. reader in Greece is rather annoying - for the reader himself. But when you discover a masterpiece like Alfrred Bester's work, even in a disastrus translation, you can't be nothing less than really happy. The vital, vibrating, vigorus fantasy leaps of Bester, are really unique and the mankind destiny, as he draws it, is really once-in-a-time in S.F. history. Simply one of the best pieces of literature ever written - and you get that opinnion by an European, O.K.?" - Crete TV 1/6/98

Thanks for the comments. I agree! Steve 1/6/98
