Endymion Discussion

"Why can't authors learn to end a story when it is finished?! I read the first 50 pages of Endymion , then threw it aside in disgust. On account of a sense of professionalism, I picked it back up, eventually, and finished it. I also had the lingering hope that it would improve. It didn't. The ideas are trite, the characters are shallow (boring) The situations come across as incredibly . . . manufactured; that is, weak. It is perfectly enjoyable if you are in the mood for some pulp; there is nothing wrong with a good writer deciding to write some fluff for a change; never the less, it is almost unforgiveable of Simmons to sully such stellar works as Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion by actually tying Endymion in with them. Not only does Endymion lack the mystique and power of those two novel, but it blatantly contradicts them at times. I guess I wouldn't be so upset it those first two books hadn't been so stunning." - Charles Bertrand 9/29/98

Thanks, Charles. I felt much the same, in fact haven't even done a review yet because of the disappointment. Your comments may spur it along though. Thanks! - Steve 10/8/98
