Slan

A.E. van Vogt, Top 20

Easy-reading fun with a message. Although written in 1940, Slan doesn't feel out-of-date. The romping adventure and mystery keep the story moving while an intricate plot keeps you guessing. Although now, 57 years later, some of the situations and environments seem familiar if not over-used, this story still feels fresh and interesting the sign of a true classic.

The mere fact that you can still fairly easily find it, proves a strength and power to withstand the tests of time. How many of the books written this year will still be in 2047 bookstores? Time separates and honors the deep and meaningful works of creative, artistic genius.

In this case, the artistry doesn't come to us wrapped in serious philosophical speculations or complicated intellectualisms. Slan reminds me more of a Haiku poem or a cold high mountain stream running through a grassy meadow. The straightforward simplicity brings an unusual clarity that distills human emotion and feeling down to its universal, timeless essence.
