Mists of Avalon

Marion Zimmer Bradley
Locus 1984, Top 20

The best Arthurian tale dark, mysterious, totally captivating. Written from a female point of view which gives the story a startlingly fresh perspective.

The magic feels real, the relationships strange but believable, the plot complex and fascinating. The other Bradley books I've read seem more young-reader oriented and shallow; this one however has all the depth and style of a true classic.

Though shrouded in legendary images, these characters come alive with understandable psychological complexes and strong emotions overflowing with tears, love, hate, and joy.

Underlying magic, fairy, and conflict between indigenous and Christian culture add a tension and depth that both captivates and inspires. One of the few books I would recommend to almost everyone.
