The Lions of Al-Rassan
Guy Kay
Internet Top 100

Vast and exciting semi-historical novel with complex characters and plots. Not extremely deep but continuously entertaining.

And infrequent but reflective insights: "There are moments in some lives when it can truly be said that everything pivots and changes, when the branching paths show clearly, when one does make a choice." "The deeds of men as footprints in the desert." "How could men grow swollen with pride, nourish delusions of their worth or the worth of the frail, vain things they made, if they truly believed in Ashar and the stars?"

Realistic enough to believe that it's an actual history, imaginative enough to captivate attention. Good reading but not a great book. I preferred Kay's earlier book, Tigana.
