Falling Free

Lois McMaster Bujold
Nebula 1988

This week all the newspapers and magazines filled up with articles and editorials about cloning. "Sheep Cloned", "Monkey Cloned", "Scientists Play God", "Ban Human Cloning!", on and on. Fortunately, science fiction in it's revered role of preparing us for the future, has diligently thought-through and role-played these eventualities. The ethical, moral and practical dimensions have an extensive library into which Lois McMaster Bujold made major contributions.

This is her first major award in a prolific writing career that has already won 3 Hugos (1991,1992, & 1995). I read the last one, Mirror Dance, first which made Falling Free disappointing. Inspiring thoughhow much creative writing style, imagination and story-telling skills can evolve in just 7 years.

It entertains but without much excitement, holds interest without much suspense, cheers but borders on boredom. There's never much doubt about what will happen next. Even so and especially if you see any cloning in your near future, a good book to read.
