Journeys through
time feel more full than journeys through space. Perhaps because we're more
familiar with history than we are with outer space. History has more of the
sights, sounds and smells we know while in deep space or on another planet,
anything goes. For this reason, books about time travel tend to have more boundaries
and less fantasy.
Add in a dash of sorcery however; magic from ancient Egypt, ancient debilitated gods, semi-immortal men with evil plans, and the limiting parameters of the time travel genre quickly dissolve. Such is the case with The Anubis Gates. In fact, Powers does a surprising job at making extremely far-fetched situations seem believable. At points though this challenge surpasses even the author who falls back on "God knew why" a fairly major event occurs.
Strange that this
didn't win any of the major awards - although consistently in the top 15 of
all time on The Internet Top 100 votes. Even stranger, not even nominated for
a Nebula Award though clearly better than some of the winners and far above
many nominations. Lacks the depth and consistency of stories like Timescape
and Doomsday Book but maintains more excitement
and imagination.
