Lord of the Rings

J.R.R. Tolkien
Internet Top 100, Top 20

Probably the most well-known and most written about fantasy books of all time.

If you haven't read Lord of the Rings; please quit your job, drop out of school, get divorced or do whatever it takes to find enough time. On the other hand, if you've tried to read Tolkien and don't feel impressed, it doesn't mean that you won't like other science fiction and fantasy books.

As much as most people love this story, for others it falls flat. Long sections at times border on tedious and, along with Frodo, we can tire of the seemingly endless journey.

For me, what sets this so far above most books lies less in what's said than in what's not said. The depth of background, the underlying mythological allusions, the historical depth and consistency all mix into a believability, a world that feels as real as our own. A world as interesting to visit as most first class tourist attractions.
