Neuromancer Discussion

"Neuromancer and The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are at the top of my list of 10 most overrated works of Science Ficton. William Gibson's writing is terrible and the whole thing is just a passive agressive wallowing in adolencent male comic book nihlism. So he as small insight into net culture that is turning out totally wrong. Big Deal. People recommend this to me for years and I couldn't wait to read it. Well I was STUNNED at how bad it was. I should probably go back and try again as it can't possibly be as bad as I remember it." - Bob 1/19/98

It does have a kind of comic book flavor - but I liked comic books and still do certain ones like Elf Quest. I haven't felt at all the same way about Gibson's other books but I really loved Neuromancer. Strange how things effect different people at different times in different ways. I notice in myself with movies if I'm in a good mood, I can really like a silly, shallow, low-rated one. If I'm in a bad mood though, I can suffer through a good one. The great ones though transcend and even create mood. Something like this must happen with books too. Steve 1/21/98

"William Gibson is one of the most exciting new writers to hit science fiction in a long while." - Robert Silverberg (from book jacket)

"Science fiction of exceptional texture and vision . . . Gibson opens up a new genre, wth a finely crafted grittiness, and a number of literary and computer inventions that may well stick. . . sheer pleasure." - Stewart Brand (from book jacket)

"An enthralling adventure story, as brilliant and coherent as a laser. This is why science fiction was invented. - Bruce Sterling (from book jacket)
