Woodburning Clay Stove and Inez

The Sasardi Integrated Reserve (RIS) is a one hour hike from Trigana Bay in the Uraba Gulf in Acandi County, Choco, Colombia. It is approximately 140 hectares and both primary and secondary forests can be found in the reserve. The small community that resides within the RIS formed a non-profit organization called The Darien Foundation to protect the rainforest. They take a holistic approach to their mission including environmental education, manufacturing of handicrafts, recycling of wastes and maintaining good relations with other local communities.

The Darien Foundation leads a protection program of the Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), which involves transfer of hatches and stockyard care of the eggs until the newborn sea turtles move to the sea. The Foundation also runs courses with the local community, for international scholars and visitors about traditional knowledge and use of local plants, appropriate technologies, and dendrology.

The Darien Foundation operates an International Voluntary Working Camp for environmental volunteers. It also organizes handicraft workshops for local communities to teach how to use forest materials in a sustainable way as an alternative source of income.

The Darien Foundation is part of the Ecovillage Network of the Americas (ENA), a non-profit, public policy, research, education and networking project operated by sustainable community workers and volunteers throughout the Americas. ENA's focus is the needs of future generations for a safe and healthy planet to inhabit.
